Rose Of The Sea - Osaki Nana by ConnieMeow Rose Of The Sea - Osaki Nana by ConnieMeow
Hello to all of you! I know that there was a long period in which I haven't submitted anything, so there you go! Here is a picture of Osaki Nana from the anime Nana.
The original idea was to make a country girl with a toothpick in the corner of her mouth. The more I was lining, I felt like drawing Nana, so I kept going until I finished this relaxing and yet romantic piece. When I drew this I was really down. I think that it came out with such a gentle, relaxing expression, because I felt like seeing this motherly, understanding face.
It took around 4-5 hours in total, but I did it in 3 days.
I am open to suggestions and opinions, because I am trying to improve the quality, maybe even the technique of the art that I submit.

I do not own the background!

This is really a very beautiful picture. I'm trying to keep my strict criticism but it's very difficult. The first thing I really like is the way you used the colors. Black, white and red, the make a wonderful combination. Also, I like how you used the traditionnal black and white manga style but added your own mark by coloring the roses, lips and fire or the cigarette in red. Another thing impressing me is how the very traditionnal landscape, like a painting of many centuries ago, combining both mountain and sea, fits very well with the modern manga character.
Also, it is remarquable how few shades there are here, but there shouldn't be more. It is simple, but still not only correct, but pleasant to the eye.
However no art is perfect. Even the tinyest mistake or exageration counts.
I believe the nose's shadow is too large and too straight. The line should be in the middle of the nose, between the nostrils, because it's the nose's bone shading the right part of her nose.
I'm not really fan of that manga style, I find it too labored, but I won't insist on that because it's really just a matter of taste.
What do you think?

A well thought out piece, using only black, white and red was a good idea. However I feel like the shading is a tad too sharp, otherwise a great piece. Brought here by ProjectComment.
